BORMIO, Italy, Feb 19 - Russian ski mountaineer Nikita Filippov made history Thursday, becoming the first individual neutral athlete to win a medal at the Winter Games. Filippov secured silver in the inaugural SkiMo men’s sprint event.

Competing under neutral status, Filippov was supported by friends chanting his name. He acknowledged receiving negative comments online but dismissed them, focusing on the positive reception from the SkiMo community. Fellow competitors, like Spain's Ot Ferrer Martinez, expressed happiness for his success.

Filippov's performance was anticipated, with prior bronze medals in World Cup sprint events. French Olympic bronze medallist Thibault Anselmet described Filippov as "really strong" and a "great athlete."

Despite the pressure of being seen as a medal hope, Filippov remained focused. He expressed that while seeing other athletes with national flags is difficult, he is content to be competing and achieving his childhood dream.

Filippov voiced hope for an end to neutral athlete status, wishing for a return to national representation in future competitions.
