Megan Wotherspoon will run 1,500 kilometers across Saskatchewan over 30 days to honor her mother, who died of leukemia at age 38. Wotherspoon, who turns 38 this year, began her journey Monday.

Her mother worked as a forestry technician and loved Saskatchewan's landscapes. The route traces four ecoregions: Taiga Shield, Boreal Shield, Parkland, and Prairie. It starts in Stony Rapids and passes through both national parks in the province.

Wotherspoon, a teacher and experienced long-distance hiker, will run 50 to 70 kilometers daily. Her students will track her progress online. She is fundraising for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada, having reached 99% of her $15,597 goal.

"I think I'll be so relieved and thankful to get to the finish line," she said. "We know the finish is not guaranteed in any race."
