Team Canada is set to face the United States in the World Baseball Classic quarterfinal round, aiming for their best-ever tournament performance. The game features significant Alberta connections, notably starting pitcher Michael Soroka, a Calgary native with 91 Major League Baseball appearances. His former coach, Chris Reitsma, expressed immense pride in Soroka's achievement and its importance for Canadian baseball.
Canada has already achieved a historic tournament run, advancing past pool play for the first time after a 7-2 victory over Cuba. Their pitching has been a strong point, with an Earned Run Average of 2.38. Manager Ernie Whitt may also call on reliever Matt Wilkinson, who developed his skills with the Okotoks Dawgs in the Western Canadian Baseball League before being drafted by the Cleveland Guardians in 2023. "He was pretty advanced for his age when he came here," said Dawgs head coach Lou Pote, highlighting Wilkinson's consistent brilliance.

While the U.S. is heavily favored, an upset is not unprecedented. Canada secured an 8-6 victory against the Americans in their first WBC encounter in 2006. Reitsma, who was part of that 2006 team, emphasized the honor of playing at a high level for one's country.
