Tyran Stokes, the nation's top-ranked men's basketball recruit, has committed to the University of Kansas. The announcement on Tuesday concluded an extensive recruitment process that considered factors such as coaching and endorsements.

Stokes, a 6-foot-7 forward from Seattle's Ranier Beach High School, is widely regarded as the premier prospect in his class. His skills were showcased in a 63-point game last season and at the McDonald's All-American Game, where he led the West team with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Stokes narrowed his choices to Oregon, Kansas, and Kentucky. Oregon was eliminated from contention, leaving Kansas and Kentucky, two prominent college basketball programs, as the final contenders for the likely one-and-done prospect.

Kansas, which secured the top recruit Darryn Peterson last year, was considered a frontrunner after Stokes' campus visit approximately one year ago. The decision also navigated Stokes' multi-year NIL deal with Nike and the status of Kansas coach Bill Self, who confirmed his return for his 24th season amid past health concerns.

Kentucky, a Nike-affiliated program, made a strong push, reportedly offering Stokes' high school assistant coach, Jamal Crawford, a position on their staff. However, Stokes ultimately chose the Jayhawks.

The Jayhawks, having lost players like Darryn Peterson, Flory Bidunga, Bryson Tiller, Elmarko Jackson, and Jamari McDowell to the NBA and transfer portal, will rely on Stokes' scoring ability. They have also added Keanu Dawes, Leroy Blyden Jr., and Christian Reeves, alongside top high school recruits Taylen Kinney, Davion Adkins, Trent Perry, and Luke Barnett.

Kentucky has also been active in rebuilding its roster, bringing in transfers like Zoom Diallo and Alex Wilkins, and prep recruits Mason Williams and Zyon Hawthorne. They had hoped Stokes would fill the void left by players such as Denzel Aberdeen, Andrija Jelavic, Mouhamed Dioubate, and Brandon Garrison.
