Uruguayan cyclist Guillermo Thomas Silva sprinted to victory in stage two of the Giro d'Italia, becoming the first Uruguayan to win a Grand Tour stage. The 221-kilometer ride from Burgas to Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria was marred by a crash involving nearly 20 riders on the rain-soaked roads.

Silva, riding for XDS Astana, narrowly beat Spaniard Florian Stork in a photo finish. Giulio Ciccone finished third.

Australian rider Jay Vine was among those injured in the crash, which occurred approximately 198 kilometers into the stage. Vine was taken to a local hospital and forced to abandon the race.
