UK Athletics has been fined £350,000 after pleading guilty to corporate manslaughter in the 2017 death of Paralympic athlete Abdullah Hayayei.

The 36-year-old javelin and shot put competitor from the United Arab Emirates was training at the Newham Leisure Centre in London, preparing for the 2017 World Paralympic Athletics Championships, when a metal throwing cage collapsed and struck him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation found that the cage's stabilizing metal base plates were missing. UK Athletics admitted to gross negligence in safety management.

The governing body was also ordered to pay £44,000 in court costs. Keith Davies, 78, the head of sport for the 2017 championships, pleaded guilty to a health and safety offense and was sentenced to a community order with 175 hours of unpaid work.

UK Athletics issued an apology, stating the failings should never have happened and that it has since strengthened safety standards.
