A man has been sentenced to six weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, after pleading guilty to sending racially abusive messages to England defender Jess Carter during last year's Women's European Championship.

The incident occurred while Carter was competing in the tournament, which culminated in England defeating Spain on penalties in the final. The 28-year-old reported receiving the abuse via her TikTok account.

In addition to the suspended sentence, the offender received a four-year football banning order, 10 days of community service, and a three-month curfew.

John Moran of the Crown Prosecution Service stated the case should serve as a warning: 'This type of social media offending will not be tolerated.'
