Bundesliga club Union Berlin has named Marie-Louise Eta as head coach, marking the first time a woman will lead a men's team in one of Europe's top five leagues. The 34-year-old takes over for the remainder of the season.

Eta previously made history as the first female assistant coach in Bundesliga history in 2023. Her appointment comes after the dismissal of former coach Steffen Baumgart, who struggled to maintain the club's form in the latter half of the season.

Union Berlin currently sits seven points above the relegation play-off spot with five games remaining.

Eta's playing career included winning the Women's Champions League in 2010 and three Bundesliga titles. She retired at 26 to begin her coaching career, working with youth teams and the German FA. She is also set to coach Union Berlin's women's team from the summer.
