New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter is speaking out against participation trophies, declaring that victory must be earned. The five-time World Series champion was captured on FOX Sports giving his daughters a pep talk in the car, shifting from encouragement to intensity.
"Is that you do your best, and you have fun, and you root for your teammates," Jeter said. "Regardless of what happens, mommy and daddy are proud of you."
When one daughter asked if he’d still be proud if they finished last, Jeter affirmed - as long as they worked hard. But the tone shifted quickly.
"The goal is to win, don’t get it twisted. Win. Beat them down, all of them, you beat 'em down," he said.
Jeter, a 14-time All-Star and Baseball Hall of Famer, emphasized dominance: "Dominate? That means you beat ‘em. You beat ’em and then you smile and shake their hands afterwards."
He made clear his disdain for handing out trophies regardless of outcome. For Jeter, excellence requires effort, competition, and ultimately, victory.
