Amazon has announced a significant expansion of its partnership with AI startup Anthropic, pledging up to $25 billion in new investment. This includes an immediate $5 billion commitment, with an additional $20 billion tied to commercial milestones.

The deal builds upon Amazon's prior $8 billion investment, potentially raising its total stake to $33 billion. In exchange, Anthropic has committed to utilizing Amazon Web Services (AWS) extensively, agreeing to spend over $100 billion on AWS technologies through 2036.

Anthropic will leverage Amazon's infrastructure, including its custom Trainium chips, to train and deploy its Claude AI models. The company will access up to 5 gigawatts of computing capacity, with plans to utilize Amazon's Trainium2 and upcoming Trainium3 processors.

"Our custom AI silicon offers high performance at significantly lower cost for customers, which is why it’s in such hot demand," stated Amazon CEO Andy Jassy. He highlighted Anthropic's decade-long commitment to AWS Trainium as a testament to their progress in delivering essential generative AI infrastructure.

This strategic move by Amazon comes as the company anticipates substantial capital expenditures, with a significant portion dedicated to AI infrastructure development. Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI researchers, directly competes with major AI players like OpenAI and Google.
