The AI firm Anthropic is mending ties with the Trump administration after a bitter dispute over military use of its technology, sources say, as the company gears up for a potential $1 trillion IPO.
The relationship ruptured earlier this year when Anthropic refused to allow the U.S. military to use its AI models for domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. The Pentagon retaliated by labeling the company a “supply-chain risk” in March-the first such designation for a U.S. firm-barring tens of thousands of contractors from using its AI systems.
CEO Dario Amodei visited the White House in mid-April to discuss collaboration, and Anthropic was later invited to the planned signing of an executive order on AI, though the event was canceled. The tensions with the Pentagon remain, with both sides still in court over the blacklist designation.
Anthropic has since held discussions with National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent about its advanced AI system, Mythos, and critical infrastructure cybersecurity. Stronger ties with the White House are expected to boost investor confidence ahead of the IPO.
