Google is testing a significant upgrade for Android gamers with the Android 17 beta. The upcoming operating system version is set to introduce native, system-wide controller remapping. This feature will allow users to customize button inputs and swap functions, with these settings persisting across different games.
This functionality aims to improve both accessibility for players with specific needs and reduce the confusion caused by varying button layouts between games. Previously, such customization was dependent on individual game developers, leading to an inconsistent user experience. The new system-wide approach promises to make mobile gaming more intuitive and inclusive.
Users with eligible devices can enroll in the Android 17 beta to try the feature. For wired controllers, settings are found under Settings > System > Game Controller. For Bluetooth controllers, navigate to Settings > Connected devices, select the controller, then Device details > Game Controller settings. While the feature is functional, button glyphs may not yet be accurate in the current beta.
