Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince reports a historic milestone: AI agents now drive more than 57% of global internet traffic, surpassing human activity. The shift came much earlier than anticipated, underlining the rapid acceleration of AI adoption.
This refers specifically to AI-powered bots that search the web on behalf of users-like those used by ChatGPT or Gemini-scouring thousands of sites per query. In contrast, earlier bots like search engine crawlers surpassed human traffic a decade ago.
The data shows stark regional differences: North America leads AI bot activity at 68.6%, while the American Midwest sees more human traffic. Gibraltar records 97% bot traffic, but in Cuba and Laos, humans dominate at over 80%.
The milestone revives the 'dead internet' theory-that web traffic will soon consist almost entirely of bots interacting with each other. Evidence includes studies showing 40% of Facebook posts and 44% of new songs are AI-generated.
Prince himself, however, disagrees with the theory, arguing AI democratizes content creation, giving voice to a broader audience.
