AI’s rapid advance is triggering unprecedented disruption in labor markets-especially for coders-according to Christian Catalini, Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer at Lightspark and MIT Cryptoeconomics Lab Founder.
Catalini says entry-level coding roles are most at risk as AI excels at automating established practices but falters in novel domains. “Coding will bifurcate,” he notes, with a “missing junior loop” emerging as AI replaces routine tasks.
Despite AI’s power, Catalini draws a sharp line between measurable skills-easily replicated by machines-and human judgment, which remains beyond algorithmic reach. “If something has been measured, the machine will replicate it. But there’s no such thing as ‘good judgment’ that can be fully quantified.”
He argues society must rethink institutions built around scarce human intelligence now that artificial cognition is abundant. The future, he predicts, will demand more human verification-not less-to ensure AI aligns with human intent and values.
“The pace of change hasn’t been seen before,” Catalini warns. “We’re entering a complex era where oversight, not just automation, defines progress.”
