AI pioneer Yann LeCun has launched Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI), a new artificial intelligence startup, securing $1.03 billion. The company will focus on building "world models," AI systems trained on real-world data from sensors and cameras, aiming for more accurate predictions and enhanced safety.
AMI plans to deploy this technology in industries where reliability and safety are paramount, including automation, robotics, healthcare, and wearable devices. The startup has appointed serial AI entrepreneur Alex LeBrun as CEO and former Meta and Google researcher Saining Xie as chief science officer.
French President Emmanuel Macron lauded the launch, stating LeCun "opens a new chapter in artificial intelligence" with AMI. The company will operate globally, with hubs in Paris, New York, Montreal, and Singapore. LeCun, a renowned figure in deep learning, previously won the Turing Award in 2018 for his groundbreaking work in the field.
