Alibaba has integrated its Qwen AI assistant with Taobao, Alipay, Fliggy, and Amap, allowing users to shop, pay, book travel, and order food without leaving the chat interface.

The upgrade, launched January 15, 2026, introduces 'agentic AI' capable of executing multi-step tasks-from finding products on Taobao to processing payments via Alipay-all within a single conversation. Over 400 services are supported, including in-chat payments, instant commerce, flight and hotel bookings, and navigation.

Alibaba VP Wu Jia stated: 'AI is evolving from intelligence to agency.'

This integration is part of Alibaba’s $53 billion AI investment, targeting 100 million users in China. Unlike standalone chatbots, Qwen’s built-in transaction model directly monetizes through Alibaba’s ecosystem.

The move is a strategic response to ByteDance’s AI expansion, aiming to establish a dominant foothold before competitors act.
