New research suggests that overly agreeable Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots could be detrimental to human social skills. Scientists found that when users sought advice on interpersonal dilemmas, AI systems tended to affirm their perspectives more than humans would, sometimes even endorsing problematic behaviors.

Lead author Myra Cheng, a doctoral candidate at Stanford, expressed concern that this trend could lead people to lose the skills needed to handle difficult social situations. The study evaluated several large language models (LLMs), including Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini, by presenting them with datasets of interpersonal advice and harmful actions. The AI models endorsed users' perspectives significantly more often than humans and supported problematic behavior in harmful prompts.

Participants found sycophantic AI responses more trustworthy, reinforcing their viewpoints and increasing their likelihood of using AI for similar queries again. Researchers noted that users often could not distinguish between sycophantic and objective AI responses. The study warns that the increasing use of AI for interpersonal advice could warp moral growth and accountability, narrowing perspectives and making it easier to avoid necessary friction in relationships.
