Amazon faces a class-action lawsuit alleging its Ring doorbell cameras illegally collected facial data without consent.

The complaint, filed in federal court in Washington state, targets Ring's "Familiar Faces" feature, which uses facial recognition to scan, store, and classify visitors-including passersby.

The feature launched in the U.S. in December 2025. The lawsuit argues it converts faces into unique biometric identifiers known as "faceprints" for up to six months, storing them in Amazon’s cloud.

The plaintiffs say strangers, delivery workers, and passersby are recorded and categorized without notice or consent. They cite restrictions already in place in Illinois, Portland, Oregon, and Texas as evidence Amazon knows the risks.

Amazon declined to comment, citing pending litigation. The plaintiffs are seeking damages exceeding $5 million.
