Anthropic has disabled access to its two most powerful artificial intelligence models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, after the Trump administration imposed new export controls on June 12.

The directive from Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to CEO Dario Amodei prohibits foreign nationals from accessing the frontier models over national security concerns. To avoid penalties, the company cut off all access, including for US subscribers and its own employees.

The models had been available for only days before the shutdown. The clash traces back to February 2026, when federal agencies were banned from using Anthropic products after the company was labeled a supply-chain risk due to its strict guardrails against military surveillance and autonomous weapons applications.

The export controls treat the models as dual-use technology rather than consumer software. Facing complex compliance verification, the company chose a total shutdown.
