U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has issued a direct warning to Chinese artificial intelligence firms. In an interview, he stated the Trump administration will scrutinize Chinese "open-weight" models for potential intellectual property theft from leading American AI labs.
Bessent said if evidence is found, the U.S. has the ability to impose sanctions against the guilty Chinese companies. This threat follows the rapid rise of competitive and lower-cost Chinese models, which U.S. businesses are increasingly adopting.
The move represents a significant escalation. While the U.S. has previously restricted China's access to advanced AI chips, this would be the first direct sanctions targeting Chinese model makers. The administration is responding to accusations from American firms like Anthropic and OpenAI that foreign competitors are harvesting data from their systems.
However, the issue is not one-sided. Critics, including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, have called the accusations hypocritical. Furthermore, Anthropic recently settled a landmark $1.5 billion copyright lawsuit with authors, and OpenAI faces its own legal challenges over training data.
The geopolitical tension may be moot if China follows through on its own reported threat to restrict foreign access to its top AI models, a retaliatory measure against U.S. policies.
