Anthropic is making its AI chatbot Claude more accessible by offering its memory feature to all users at no cost. This move follows Claude's surge in popularity, having recently overtaken ChatGPT as the most downloaded free app in the U.S. app store.

Claude is also introducing a free import tool designed to help users transfer their AI context from other chatbots. This feature allows users to import data, such as personal details, career information, and ongoing projects, making the transition to Claude seamless.

To enable the memory feature, users can navigate to Settings within the Claude app or website and activate "Generate memory from chat history." Claude will then automatically synthesize key insights from conversations, updating them daily to provide context for new interactions. For instance, if a user researches dental implants, Claude will retain that context for future related queries.

Users have control over their data, with options to "Pause memory" or "Reset memory" to delete all stored information. The import tool can be accessed via the Memory settings, where users copy a prompt to feed into other chatbots like ChatGPT or Gemini. The resulting data, exported as a Markdown file, can then be uploaded to Claude to populate its memory.
