Canada's minister overseeing artificial intelligence is set to meet with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman next week. The discussion will focus on strengthening safety protocols for the ChatGPT maker, prompted by a recent school shooting in British Columbia.

Minister Evan Solomon stated that while OpenAI has expressed willingness to enhance law enforcement referral protocols and establish direct contact with Canadian authorities, a detailed implementation plan is still lacking. OpenAI previously informed the government it had banned the ChatGPT account of the alleged shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar, for policy violations, but had not contacted police.

Solomon plans to seek clarity from Altman on how commitments to improve safety will translate into concrete actions. The minister also indicated meetings with other major tech platforms operating in Canada are planned, with all legislative options on the table.
