Ford Motor Company has issued more vehicle recalls than any other U.S. automaker so far in 2026. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirms the Dearborn-based manufacturer has initiated 51 recalls since January 1. This figure vastly exceeds second-place Stellantis, which has recorded only 19 recalls during the same period.
Industry experts attribute this surge to a 2024 consent order between Ford and federal regulators. Michael Brooks of the Center for Auto Safety states that independent third-party oversight and mandated safety expenditures have forced Ford to identify and report defects more aggressively than its competitors. This regulatory pressure has resulted in elevated recall numbers throughout 2024, 2025, and now 2026.
Ford’s most significant action this year involved 4.3 million vehicles with faulty trailer lighting and braking systems. Other major manufacturers face scrutiny as well. Stellantis recalled over one million units due to power steering wiring fire risks, while General Motors addressed rearview camera failures in 276,000 Chevrolet Malibu sedans. Hyundai and Toyota also issued substantial recalls affecting hundreds of thousands of SUVs for airbag and seat locking defects respectively.
The NHTSA emphasizes that most recalls are voluntary measures taken before federal intervention. Vehicle owners are urged to verify their safety status immediately by checking their VIN through official government channels or authorized dealership service centers.
