Google is making a renewed push into AI-powered eyewear, announcing partnerships with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to build Android XR smart glasses. The devices, previewed at Google I/O 2026, will feature Google's Gemini AI for hands-free tasks like directions, text messaging, and photo capture.

The first models will be audio-focused with cameras, followed by versions with optical displays. They will support real-time translation, object identification, music playback, and note saving via voice commands. Google is positioning these glasses as a more practical entry point for AI hardware, contrasting with bulky mixed reality headsets.

This move pits Google directly against Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses. Google's advantage lies in its ecosystem: Gemini, Android, Maps, Search, Photos, and Workspace. The first devices from Warby Parker and Gentle Monster are expected later this year.
