Grand Theft Auto 6, one of the most anticipated games in history, will launch without a physical disc. Rockstar Games confirmed its physical edition will contain a digital download code, a move that has sparked debate among gamers and retailers.
The decision reflects the industry's accelerating shift toward digital distribution. Market data shows most new Xbox consoles in the U.S. lack a disc drive, and over a quarter of PlayStation 5 consoles are also digital-only. Physical game sales are at an all-time low.
For some gamers, the change is negligible. "Whether there's a physical disc or not it doesn't really change anything for me," said content creator Alogirlx. However, others view it as a step away from owning a product toward merely licensing access. Consumer advocacy group Stop Killing Games highlights a trust issue, noting publishers' poor record of preserving access to games after ending support.

Retailers are reacting. Some independent stores in Canada and the U.S. have refused to stock the code-only product, citing a commitment to preserving physical ownership value. One retailer launched a petition for a disc version.
Potential reasons for Rockstar's decision include security concerns to prevent leaks and development timelines allowing last-minute patches. The game launches November 19th for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S and X.
