Google LLC has launched Universal Cart, an artificial intelligence tool designed to simplify online shopping across its ecosystem. The tool debuted today at Google I/O 2026.
Universal Cart is integrated into Google Search, the Gemini app, YouTube, and Gmail. It analyzes product descriptions to find relevant e-commerce listings, compares offers, and displays price histories to help users identify genuine discounts. If an item is out of stock, the tool can monitor the listing and alert the user when it becomes available.
The AI also detects inconsistencies in shopping carts, such as incompatible computer components. Powered by Google's Gemini large language models, Universal Cart uses Google Wallet for payment and Google Pay to expedite checkout. Some merchants will allow purchases directly within the Google Pay interface, while others will sync orders to third-party carts.
Underpinning the service is the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), developed with retailers and Stripe Inc., which standardizes how AI interacts with online stores. UCP eliminates the need for custom integrations, enabling automation of tasks like checking stock availability.
Universal Cart will roll out to US users this summer on Google Search and the Gemini App, with Gmail and YouTube support to follow. Google also plans to introduce AP2, a technology that lets AI agents autonomously make purchases based on user instructions.
