French artificial intelligence startup Mistral AI has secured $830 million in debt financing to acquire thousands of Nvidia GPUs for a new European data center near Paris.
The loan was led by a consortium of seven banks including Bpifrance, BNP Paribas, and HSBC. The facility is expected to launch in Q2 2026, with plans for a second site in Sweden.
Mistral positions itself as an open-source alternative to U.S.-based AI firms such as OpenAI and Anthropic. Valued at €11.7 billion, it aims to support European digital sovereignty through localized AI infrastructure.
CEO Arthur Mensch emphasized the strategic importance of self-reliant AI development for government and enterprise users seeking autonomy from global cloud providers.

This move reflects a growing trend where AI hardware investments are shifting toward institutional debt markets. Mistral's approach allows growth without equity dilution but relies heavily on access to Nvidia’s chip supply chain.
