A new EU regulation may soon mandate microplastic filters on washing machines, a move championed by companies like Matter.

The problem is vast. Synthetic fabrics, which make up about 60% of global textile production, shed tiny plastic fibers with every wash. Matter's research indicates a single wash cycle releases about one gram of microplastics-adding up to an estimated 16 tonnes daily in the UK alone.

These particles act as chemical sponges in waterways, contaminating the base of the food chain.

Matter, a finalist for the 2025 Earthshot Prize, offers a solution: a retrofit filter that attaches to existing machines in under 10 minutes. The device achieves 97% efficiency, capturing particles as small as 10 microns.

CEO Adam Root emphasizes the need for scale, noting partnerships with major appliance brands are crucial. The company currently sells in 11 countries, aiming to expand across the EU.

A key challenge is what to do with the collected material. While current EU rules allow landfill disposal, Matter is pioneering a circular model through its "Love Your Lint" program, aiming to transform lint into new materials.

Pending EU legislation requiring built-in filters could rapidly accelerate market adoption for this technology.
