Meta Platforms has revived its 'Malibu 2' smartwatch project, with a debut anticipated in 2026. The device is set to feature integrated health tracking and a built-in Meta AI assistant.
The company previously explored smartwatch development approximately five years ago, including ambitious plans for camera-equipped versions. However, the project was shelved in 2022 amidst broader spending reductions within its Reality Labs division.
This move signals a renewed focus on wearables, spurred by the accelerating artificial intelligence boom. Companies are increasingly incorporating AI into gadgets, particularly for health and fitness applications. Meta's existing AI-powered Ray-Ban smartglasses have seen significant adoption, with nearly 6 million units shipped last year.
Meta currently has several augmented and mixed-reality glasses in development. The company is strategically reassessing launch timelines to avoid overwhelming consumers with too many new devices released too quickly. For instance, its 'Phoenix' MR glasses are now slated for a 2027 release.
