Meta will discontinue end-to-end encryption for private Instagram messages by May 8, 2026. The shift allows the company to access user message content previously shielded from view.
The move follows sustained pressure from law enforcement and child protection organizations, including the UK’s Internet Watch Foundation and the Virtual Global Taskforce, which argued encrypted chats hinder efforts to detect child sexual abuse material.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had previously championed encryption across its platforms in 2019, rolling it out to WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram by 2023. Now, the reversal marks a significant retreat from that privacy-first stance.
Critics had labeled the encryption push a 'design choice that degrades safety systems.' Meta did not respond to requests for comment ahead of the policy change.
