Microsoft is undergoing a major leadership transition in its gaming division. Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft Gaming for 38 years, is retiring. Asha Sharma, an insider, has been named the new executive vice president and CEO of the gaming division, reporting directly to Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella. Sharma stated her immediate priority is to renew focus on the Xbox console and its core fanbase.

The move comes as Microsoft Gaming faces intense industry competition, cost pressures, and fluctuating consumer spending, which have led to price increases on Xbox hardware. The company's gaming revenue saw a reported decline of approximately 9.5% in the fourth quarter. Despite these challenges, Microsoft completed its substantial acquisition of Activision Blizzard last year, significantly expanding its presence in the video-gaming market.

Spencer will remain in an advisory capacity through the summer to facilitate a seamless transition. Additionally, Sarah Bond, president and chief operating officer at Xbox, is departing to pursue new opportunities. Matt Booty, formerly president of game content and studios, has been appointed executive vice president and chief content officer, reporting to Sharma.
