TOKYO, April 3 - Microsoft announced a $10 billion investment in Japan from 2026 to 2029 to expand artificial intelligence infrastructure and enhance cybersecurity cooperation with the Japanese government.

The initiative includes training 1 million engineers and developers by 2030. It was unveiled during a visit by Vice Chair and President Brad Smith.

Microsoft will collaborate with domestic firms such as SoftBank and Sakura Internet to increase Japan-based AI computing capacity. This allows companies and government agencies to maintain sensitive data locally while accessing Azure services.

Japan’s AI adoption has surged since 2024, with roughly 20% of working-age adults using generative AI tools. The country projects an AI and robotics workforce shortage of over 3 million by 2040.
