Elon Musk's $150 billion lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman is playing out in a California federal court, but the ultimate decision rests not with a jury-but with US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers.

Judge Gonzalez Rogers, a 61-year-old appointee of President Barack Obama, is known for her tight courtroom control and no-nonsense demeanor. She has quickly shut down Musk's attempts to act as his own lawyer, reminding him: "Let's remind everyone in the courtroom that you are not a lawyer."

The case centers on Musk's claim that OpenAI breached a charitable trust by creating a for-profit arm in 2019. OpenAI counters that Musk is suing to benefit his own AI startup, xAI.

Gonzalez Rogers has presided over other major tech cases, including Epic Games' antitrust battle against Apple and multi-district social media addiction lawsuits. Her rulings carry extra weight because the jury's verdict in this trial is advisory only-she will make the final call.

A Princeton graduate who cleaned houses to pay tuition, Rogers has run a strict trial schedule starting at 8:00 AM with only two 20-minute breaks. She has also scolded Musk for disparaging Altman on X, asking for a "clean slate" outside the courtroom.
