Meta Platforms has agreed with space startup Overview Energy to power its data centers with energy beamed from orbit. This groundbreaking deal will secure up to 1 gigawatt of capacity from Overview's space-based solar energy system.
The technology aims to collect solar energy in space and transmit it to ground facilities for continuous power generation. Initial demonstrations are slated for 2028, with commercial delivery expected by 2030.
This partnership addresses the escalating energy demands driven by AI and data center expansion, which are straining existing power grids. Meta joins other tech giants in pursuing novel energy solutions amidst environmental concerns.
Meta is actively developing large-scale data centers nationwide, including a significant project in Louisiana. The company has also secured power agreements with Vistra, Oklo, and TerraPower, positioning itself as a major corporate buyer of nuclear energy.
