Elon Musk announced a significant joint venture between Tesla and his AI startup xAI, dubbed 'Macrohard.' This new system is designed to replicate the operational capabilities of software companies.
The project integrates xAI's Grok large language model, functioning as a central 'navigator,' with a Tesla-developed AI agent. This agent can process real-time computer screen visuals, keyboard inputs, and mouse actions.
This move follows concerns in the software sector about agentic AI's potential to disrupt existing business models, as seen with Anthropic's Claude Cowork. Musk's xAI has been developing Macrohard to simulate software creations from major companies like Microsoft, hence the name 'Macrohard' as a nod to Microsoft.
The Macrohard system will utilize Tesla's custom AI4 chips alongside xAI's Nvidia-based server hardware, promising cost-effectiveness.
This initiative follows Tesla's January agreement to invest approximately $2 billion in xAI. SpaceX also recently acquired xAI in an all-stock transaction, valuing the rocket maker at $1 trillion and xAI at $250 billion, ahead of a potential SpaceX IPO.
