OpenAI is reportedly exploring legal action against Apple over the integration of ChatGPT with Siri. The company claims Apple failed to generate the expected number of paid subscribers from the partnership, which was announced in 2024 as part of iOS 18. OpenAI has hired an independent legal firm to assess options, including a potential breach-of-contract lawsuit.
An anonymous OpenAI executive stated the company "did everything from a product perspective" but Apple did not reciprocate. The integration was meant to encourage iPhone users to subscribe to ChatGPT through the Settings app, a feature OpenAI says has not yielded the anticipated billions in revenue.
Tensions are also high on Apple's side, as OpenAI poached several Apple engineers to develop its own hardware, led by former Apple design chief Jony Ive. Apple executives are reportedly "fuming" over the recruitment tactics.
OpenAI has not yet decided to file a lawsuit and hopes to resolve the matter outside court. The dispute comes ahead of Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference, where it is expected to announce a revamped Siri powered by Google Gemini.
