A coalition of U.S. state attorneys general has launched a comprehensive investigation into OpenAI, marking a significant regulatory hurdle for the AI giant as it prepares for a public offering.
New York’s attorney general served a subpoena on Friday demanding extensive documentation. The request covers advertising strategies, user engagement metrics, and the handling of sensitive consumer and health data. Investigators are also scrutinizing policies regarding minors, seniors, and deep learning model governance.
This probe intensifies legal pressure on OpenAI, which recently filed confidentially for an IPO that could value the company at up to $1 trillion. The investigation runs parallel to a lawsuit by Florida, alleging ChatGPT harmed children by providing dangerous information, and a separate suit by a Canadian mother claiming the platform encouraged her daughter’s suicide.
An OpenAI spokesperson stated the company takes these concerns seriously and intends to engage constructively with state officials, emphasizing their commitment to responsible AI deployment.
