OpenSearch Emerges as AI Data Infrastructure Standard

Enterprises are abandoning siloed data systems in favor of unified AI-native infrastructure. OpenSearch-the open-source search and analytics suite-has surpassed 1.4 billion downloads and added IBM Corp. as a premier member, signaling its shift into enterprise production.

Bianca Lewis, executive director of the OpenSearch Software Foundation, says agentic AI demands a single, scalable data backbone. “We’re not looking at a solution for observability, another for search, and another for AI apps,” she explained. “Now we need one AI data infrastructure for all use cases.”

Lewis emphasized economic efficiency: maintaining separate infrastructures per project is unsustainable at scale. OpenSearch now integrates AI guardrails and agentic capabilities, enabling memory-aware searches and secure retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to reduce hallucinations and optimize hardware use.

The platform supports high-speed autonomous workflows-potentially exceeding 100,000 queries per minute-by combining lexical precision with contextual agent memory.
