OpenAI has paused its "Stargate" artificial intelligence infrastructure project in the United Kingdom. The company cited high energy costs and regulatory uncertainty as reasons for the halt.
The initiative, a collaboration with chipmaker Nvidia and infrastructure provider Nscale, planned to deploy up to 8,000 GPUs, with potential to scale to 31,000. This project aimed to support local computing infrastructure for advanced AI systems.
OpenAI indicated the project could move forward if energy costs and regulatory conditions become more favorable. The high industrial electricity prices in the UK and significant demand from data centers are critical factors. Operating a large data center can incur costs of $125 million to $250 million annually.
The Stargate UK project followed a memorandum of understanding between OpenAI and the UK government regarding AI adoption in public services. OpenAI stated it continues to evaluate the project and will proceed when conditions permit long-term infrastructure investment.
