OpenAI is merging ChatGPT, Codex, and Atlas into a single desktop 'superapp' to sharpen focus and accelerate development. The move aims to unify fragmented tools into a cohesive platform for agentic AI-systems that autonomously execute tasks like coding, data analysis, and web navigation.

Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s head of applications, cited internal fragmentation as a drag on quality and speed. She emphasized the need to end 'side quests' and concentrate on core strengths. Greg Brockman, president, is co-leading the overhaul.

The shift responds to competitive pressure from Anthropic, whose integrated Claude Code and Cowork tools are winning enterprise clients. A recent Pentagon deal by OpenAI-rejected by Anthropic-spurred user backlash and fueled the #QuitGPT movement, compounding challenges.

While the mobile app remains unchanged, the desktop superapp targets developers, power users, and enterprises-the primary revenue drivers. Atlas, the underperforming AI browser, and aspects of Sora, the video generator, are being deprioritized.

The new strategy leverages ChatGPT’s consumer scale to deliver advanced agentic capabilities widely. No launch date has been announced.
