The machines are now designing the machines. SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son says an AI model is responsible for designing OpenAI's next-generation system-a milestone he believes points directly to the arrival of superintelligence.
Son disclosed the insight during a CNBC interview, citing direct conversations with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and the company's engineers. His revised timeline: superintelligence, the point where AI surpasses human cognitive abilities across every domain, could arrive within two years.
SoftBank plans to invest $65 billion in OpenAI for a 13% stake, with $41 billion already deployed by the end of 2025. OpenAI now represents just over 20% of SoftBank's net asset value. Son describes the current AI revolution as "50 times bigger" than the dot-com era-and he's putting billions behind that conviction.
