Deputy Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg has officially designated Palantir’s Maven artificial intelligence system as a core program within the U.S. military.
In a March 9 letter reviewed by Reuters, Feinberg confirmed that embedding the Maven Smart System will provide warfighters with essential tools to detect and dominate adversaries across all domains.
The decision takes effect by the close of the current fiscal year in September. Oversight of Maven shifts from the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency to the Pentagon’s Chief Digital Artificial Intelligence Office. Future contracting will be managed directly by the Army.
Maven utilizes AI to analyze vast data streams from satellites and drones, identifying potential threats instantly. This move cements Palantir’s position as a critical defense contractor, following a previous $10 billion agreement with the U.S. Army. The company’s market value recently reached nearly $360 billion.
However, challenges remain. Ethical concerns persist regarding autonomous targeting, and recent reports indicate reliance on Anthropic’s Claude tool, which faces scrutiny over safety guardrails. Palantir maintains that human operators retain final responsibility for target approval.
