The European Union has launched a high-tech marine cleanup: AI-powered drones and robotic systems are now retrieving submerged litter from the seabed across Europe.

Led by Delft University of Technology and partners including French firm Subsea Tech, SeaClear2.0 deploys uncrewed surface vessels, aerial detection drones, and submersible grippers to locate and lift items like rubber tyres, metal fences, and ship parts-without sending divers into hazardous depths.

Tests have already taken place in Marseille and Germany. Upcoming deployments target Venice, Dubrovnik, and Tarragona as part of the EU’s Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters-aiming to cut marine litter by 50% by 2030.

Researchers acknowledge the system still requires refinement ahead of its scheduled conclusion in late 2026. Future applications may include detecting wartime unexploded ordnance on the seabed.
