A new global nonprofit, the Sentient Foundation, has launched with a critical mission: to ensure Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) remains open-source, decentralized, and aligned with humanity's best interests. This initiative emerges as the race towards AGI intensifies, aiming to prevent any single entity from dominating this transformative technology.

The foundation argues that powerful AI models should not be confined to private corporations, prioritizing shareholder interests over societal benefit. Drawing inspiration from successful open-source movements like Linux, the Sentient Foundation will empower researchers and developers contributing to open-source AGI.

"Just as Linux became the open backbone of the internet, we believe open-source AGI must become the backbone of human progress," stated Sachi Kamiya, Director of Venture and Growth at Sentient Foundation. "Our mission is to ensure AGI is never controlled by a single entity and that its development remains transparent, equitable, and aligned with human values."

The Sentient Foundation will operate as a neutral steward, focusing on championing alignment and safety standards, fostering global research collaboration, supporting the open-source developer community through grants, developing governance frameworks, and advocating for open-source AGI as the path forward for beneficial AI.

The organization works alongside Sentient Labs, its technical research arm, ensuring applied AI research serves the broader goal of open, aligned AGI. The Sentient Foundation invites AI researchers, developers, institutions, and policymakers to join its global coalition.
