The Japanese government will provide subsidies totaling up to 60 billion yen ($380 million) to Sony for a new image sensor plant in Kumamoto. Industry minister Ryosei Akazawa announced the funding, emphasizing the critical role of image sensors for future technologies.
Akazawa stated that image sensors are indispensable for autonomous driving and physical AI, highlighting the importance of ensuring a stable supply for these burgeoning fields. Sony, a dominant force in smartphone image sensors, also maintains significant strengths in entertainment sectors such as gaming, movies, music, and anime.
