Finland-based Tangled announced a $4.5 million seed funding round led by byFounders. The investment will fuel the development of a decentralized, social coding platform built on Bluesky's AT protocol.

The platform aims to offer a GitHub alternative, integrating features like stacked pull requests and social discovery tools. It emphasizes community self-governance and collaborative development on a distributed network.
Users will self-host repositories as "knots," with decentralized identity management allowing reputation and data portability, similar to Bluesky. The system natively integrates social collaboration and threaded issue discussions.
Tangled is designed with AI developers in mind, enabling AI agents to act as co-contributors, create repositories, and review code via its XRPC API. The platform currently boasts over 7,000 users and 5,000 repositories.
Future plans include micro virtual machines for faster builds, a customizable dashboard, and migration tools for GitHub users.
