Elon Musk's AI venture, xAI, is reportedly experiencing significant turmoil, with frequent staff departures and project leadership changes hindering progress. Of the original 11 co-founders, only two remain. Recent internal criticism from Musk regarding coding team performance has been followed by further reorganizations and project leadership shifts, including the departure of the head of the critical "Macrohard" digital agent project just 16 days after taking charge.

Musk is now redeploying Tesla's AI software head to lead the "Macrohard" reboot, aiming for collaboration between Tesla and xAI's AI expertise and Grok's language models. Despite these efforts, employee morale is reportedly suffering due to constant upheaval. xAI operates a massive data center in Memphis, Tennessee, powered by specialized AI chips and benefiting from data from Musk's X platform, which promotes the Grok chatbot.

While mass layoffs have been denied, researchers continue to leave due to burnout from demanding work conditions or lucrative offers from competitors. In response to these departures, xAI is reportedly reaching out to previously unsuccessful candidates with improved offers. Musk acknowledged the situation, stating his intention to review interview history and re-engage promising candidates. The company has also recently recruited two staff from AI coding app Cursor to enhance its "Grok Code Fast" product.
