Meta is developing an app called 'Arena' to forecast outcomes in politics, sports, and entertainment. Unlike traditional platforms like Polymarket, Arena will likely utilize a video game-like points system rather than cash, though real-money betting isn't off the table.

This initiative follows the success of prediction markets, notably during the 2024 U.S. presidential election, where platforms like Polymarket thrived, leading to billions in trading volume. Meta previously introduced a similar service, Forecast, in 2020, which was discontinued in 2022.

The rise in prediction markets has sparked interest from major trading platforms, including Coinbase and Robinhood, while also drawing regulatory scrutiny over issues such as market manipulation and consumer protection. Concerns remain about whether these event contracts are legitimate financial instruments or forms of gambling, as regulators like the CFTC continue to assess their classification.
