Tesla has officially launched its robotaxi service in Miami, the company announced. This expansion is a key part of the automaker's strategy to grow its self-driving software operations, a central focus for CEO Elon Musk's vision of AI and robotics.
The move into Miami follows the initial launch of Tesla's unsupervised robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, in June. The company has previously outlined plans to expand the service to other major Texas cities, including Dallas and Houston.
Tesla's expansion comes amid a competitive market, with rivals Alphabet's Waymo and Amazon's Zoox also accelerating their own autonomous vehicle plans. CEO Elon Musk has stated he expects fully self-driving cars without human safety monitors to become more common in the United States later this year.
