Tesla is set to expand its Robotaxi service to "a dozen or so states" by the end of 2024, according to CEO Elon Musk. Speaking during the company's first-quarter earnings call, Musk stated a cautious rollout strategy, highlighting zero injuries or fatalities to date with unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) and robotaxi operations. He anticipates robotaxi revenue will become significant next year, though not materially impactful this year.

Musk announced the expansion to Dallas and Houston in advance of the earnings call. The service allows users to order autonomous rides via a smartphone app, similar to Uber or Lyft, initially using Model Y vehicles. The Robotaxi app requires an account and is currently available on Apple iOS devices.

Tesla's vision, as outlined by Musk previously, is a future exclusively comprising autonomous vehicles, with the exception of the next-generation Roadster. The company currently operates robotaxis in limited areas of Austin, Dallas, Houston, and California, with prior plans to expand to cities like Phoenix, Miami, Orlando, Tampa, and Las Vegas.

Expansion is currently dependent on rigorous safety validation, a process Musk stressed the importance of to prevent any accidents or injuries.
